Post-9/11 GI Bill Transfer Of Entitlement

The post-9/11 GI Bill also offers some service members the opportunity to transfer their GI Bill to dependents. An individual approved to transfer an entitlement to educational assistance under this section may transfer the individual’s entitlement to the individual’s spouse, or one or more of the individual’s children or any combination of spouse and child. A family member must be enrolled in the Defense Eligibility Enrollment Reporting System (DEERS) and be eligible for benefits, at the time of transfer to receive transferred educational benefits.

Samsung American Legion Scholarship

If you are a high school junior who is a direct descendant i.e. child, grandchild, great grandchild, etc. of a US wartime veteran and participate in The American Legion Boys State program, then you are eligible to apply for the Samsung American Legion Scholarship.

Eagle Scout of the Year Scholarship

The American Legion Insurance Committee provides for a national scholarship to be awarded to the Eagle Scout who is selected “The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year.”

The American Legion Eagle Scout of the Year will receive a $10,000 scholarship. Three runner-up scholarship awards will be granted in the amount of $2,500 each.

The scholarship recipients will be eligible to receive their scholarship immediately upon graduation from high school (public, parochial, military, private, or home school) and must utilize the total award within four (4) years of their graduation date, excluding active military duty or religious mission.

The scholarship may be used to attend a school selected by the student provided it is state accredited, above the high school level, and within the continental limits of the United States, except in the case where the student may be from a possession of the United States, in which case he can select a school in that possession or in the continental United States.

Disbursement from the scholarship fund will be made jointly to the student and the school at the beginning of each semester or quarter. Only one request will be honored per semester or quarter. 

NC Veterans Scholarship

Scholarships in appreciation for the service and sacrifices of North Carolina’s war veterans, a four-year scholarship program at approved schools in North Carolina has been established for the qualifying natural or adopted (before age 15) children of certain class categories of deceased, disabled, combat or POW/MIA veterans. To qualify, the applicant must: 

Applicant must be under age 25 at time of application. Veteran's qualifying criteria must have occurred during a period of war.

At time of application, applicant must be domiciled and resident of North Carolina.

 

  • a. Veteran parent was a legal resident of North Carolina at time of said veteran's entrance into that period of service in the armed forces during which eligibility is established. OR

  • b. The applicant, of an eligible veteran, is the natural child or adopted child prior to age 15, who was born in North Carolina and has been a resident of North Carolina continuously since birth.

  • Colon Furr Nursing Scholarship

    Each year, The American Legion Department of North Carolina provides scholarships (normally 6) to students enrolled in nursing programs in North Carolina colleges.

    Scholarships are currently in the amount of $600.

    Any person who resides in North Carolina and has been accepted to or is enrolled in a 1 year Licensed Practical Nurse program, or who is enrolled in a 2, 3 or 4 year program that leads to certification as a Registered Nurse, is eligible for this scholarship.

    Each Legion Post in North Carolina can sponsor 1 applicant each year.

    State Trooper Program

    The American Legion Student Trooper Program will be conducted at the North Carolina Highway Patrol Training Center, Raleigh, and is a cooperative sponsorship of The NC American Legion and The NC Highway Patrol. Cadets will participate in a wide variety of instructional sessions. They will learn the use of police skills, including drug detection, firearms safety, and precision driving, just to name a few. Instructors from the NC Highway Patrol and other phases of Law Enforcement and related subjects will be integrated into the week’s program.

    The American Legion Dept. of NC: Oratorical Contest

    Each year The Department of North Carolina joins the 54 other departments and the over 10,000 local posts in The American Legion High School Oratorical Contest. 

    The contest, open to US citizens or lawful resident under the age of 20 and currently enrolled in grade 9-12, is designed to provide the student with the opportunity to increase their knowledge of the US Constitution and with public speaking skills that can help them with advancement in their chosen profession.     North Carolina students begin their advance toward the national finals at their local high school. Each contestant gives an 8 to 10 minute prepared speech on what it means to be a citizen under the US Constitution. Each student must also speak from 3 to 5 minutes on an "assigned topic" drawn at the contest from a list of 4 predefined topics. This topic will be the same for all contestants in the contest once drawn.

    School winners have the opportunity to compete in and advance past county, district and division contests to reach the department contest. Department winners travel to The American Legion's national headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana where they can advance through 3 rounds of contests (quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals) to become the national champion.

    In addition to scholarship awards presented by local posts the Department of North Carolina provides scholarships for participants of the division and department contests. The national organization provides scholarships for those who compete in the 3 rounds in Indianapolis with the top 3 contestants receiving $18,000, $16,000 and $14,000.
